How can we attract new players?

Since the introduction of computer games, mostly children but also adults have completely forgotten about indoor games. The intention of indoor sport games was not only to have fun but it was also used as an occasion for people to meet and spend time together. This is all being lost, it is just a matter of time until all indoor sport games will come to an end simply because nobody has yet realized what we are losing.

Although it is a necessity for every family to own a computer at home nowadays, there should be a balance between electronic and indoor hobbies. This is not happening and the idea behind indoor sport games is decreasing in popularity drastically. The more electronic games out on the market, the fewer sales of indoor sport games there are.

Subbuteo is an indoor sport game. It requires physical and mental abilities. The abilities required are a combination of chess and billiard games. One must train and play matches on a regular basis to improve his abilities and gain experience. It is also a great indoor sport to socialize amongst people. People become more mature and most important of all, become more independent.

Are you thinking what I am thinking? Newer generations are and will keep on lacking physical and mental fitness. Is this because of the easy-life style they are enjoying? Children spend most of their time in schools. We must invade schools with indoor sport games. Subbuteo Table football is ideal to have at schools and will be beneficial to the sport. There are several advantages; firstly our sport is the closest to the biggest sport in the world…. Football! Second, the Maltese level in the sport is very high. This can be seen from the world rankings with Massimo Cremona ranked no.2 in the world. Eric Verhagen from Holland is ranked no 1 in the world and is a regular visitor to our country. These two players can be utilized to attract new people into the sport. An idea would be for both players to play various games throughout the week of the MTFSA International Open Tournament in different schools as a promotion to the sport we love most. At the same time we should encourage teachers to involve children into Subbuteo by organizing school leagues throughout their breaks. The National Association together with its affiliated clubs must invest and provide the necessary equipment and accessories to the schools. Advertising plays an important role too.

I think it is about time that a forum is called for all those who are interested to see the sport we love most grow more and more by bringing all our ideas together as soon as possible. The clock is ticking; we must act now before it is too late!
